Ness Pumping and Porta Potty Rentals hosted their second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday, October 6 in the Waukon City Park to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and detection.  An even larger crowd turned out for this event.    Breast Cancer survivors were asked to sign a pink porta potty sporting the breast cancer ribbon, t-shirts were distributed and refreshments served.

Ness Pumping and Porta Potty Rentals hosted their second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday, October 6 in the Waukon City Park to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and detection.  The Ness Family recently awarded the nearly $1,600 in proceeds raised from this second annual walk to the hospital to be used towards the 3D mammography machine.   Pictured in the front row in the hospital’s mammography room, left to right, is Leslie Ness, breast cancer survivor Barb Ness (seated) holding Liam Ness, with Chad and Diana Ness presenting the donation to hospital X-ray Technologist Siobhan Kurth.  Back row, left to right, is Carter Ness, Wyatt Kiley, Sigurd Ness, Evan Ness, Colin Ness, and Kayla Ness.

The statistical benefits of digital 3D mammography include the following:

· A 41% increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers.

· A 29% increase in the detection of all breast cancers.

· A 15% decrease in women recalled for additional imaging.

“We wanted to have the walk to raise awareness and money that can be used locally for those with breast cancer,” states the Ness family.  “We always attended the walks in La Crosse and decided we wanted to help more locally. We were excited to hear about the new machine last year at Veterans Memorial Hospital and wanted to contribute again this year. After watching mom (Barb Ness) and several other family and friends go through it, we knew this was a way that we can help.”

Once again this year, the Ness family spent many hours planning and preparing for this event and ads, “We’d like to thank all of those who participated in any way this year.  We appreciate your continued support!”

To schedule a 3D Mammography exam, or for questions about this important breast health procedure, please contact the Veterans Memorial Hospital Radiology Department at 563-568-3411.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Health Care Foundation has received a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmer Brandon Guese of rural Postville. The donation will help the organization purchase a blanket warmer for patients receiving CT Scans and MRI Scans at the hospital, keeping them warm and comfortable during those tests.  Pictured at right is Brandon Guese presenting the check to Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation members, left to right, Nona Sawyer, Sue Blagsvedt, Jane Dietrich, Ardie Kuhse, Nancy Schoh, Dennis Lyons and Mike Myers, Veterans Memorial Hospital Administrator.

“Every year when Monsanto asks me to nominate an organization, I always mention Veterans Memorial Hospital,” states Brandon.  “It’s so important that we have a hospital here, so it is always an easy decision each year to recommend them.  I’m glad they received it this year.”

Veterans Memorial Hospital serves over 20,000 people in the Allamakee and northern Clayton County area.  The numbers of  people receiving these MRI and CT tests at the hospital have greatly increased these last few years.

For six years, America’s Farmers Grow Communities has collaborated with farmers to donate over $22 million to more than 8,000 community organizations across rural America. Winning farmers will direct donations to nonprofits to help fight rural hunger, purchase life saving fire and EMS equipment, support ag youth leadership programs, buy much needed classroom resources, and so much more.

America’s Farmers Grow Communities partners with farmers to support local nonprofit causes that positively impact farming communities across rural America. Grow Communities is one program in the America’s Farmers community outreach effort, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Other programs include America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, which encourages rural youth to remain in agriculture and provides $1,500 college scholarships to high school and college students pursuing ag-related degrees and America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, which works with farmers to nominate rural school districts to compete for $10,000 and $25,000 math and science grants. Pictured in back is Dawn Rae Blocker with Ashley and Brittany Liddiard, all of Waukon. Together, these neighbors have joined forces, working together on making fleece blankets in an effort to give back to the community.  Recently, they made and donated these fleece blankets for the first baby girl and first baby boy of 2016 born at Veterans Memorial Hospital, following the first baby of the year.
