Grief Support Group

The local Grief Support Group will begin holding monthly meetings at Veterans Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 2, from 5-6 pm in the Meditation Healing Center, located just inside the main entrance of the hospital.  Nancy Haberichter will be facilitating the meeting.

This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief. Please feel free to attend and bring a friend.  This grief support will continue meeting the first Thursday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

VMH Babysitting Seminar

Veterans Memorial Hospital will sponsor the next Babysitting Seminar on Friday, April 3, from 9 am to Noon.  Corinne Cook, RN, will be leading this class which will be held in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of Veterans Memorial Hospital.    

Intended participants are individuals 10 years of age and older who are responsible for their own care after school until their parents come home from work, and individuals who care for other children in or outside of their own home. Girls and boys are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Topics to be covered include fire and personal safety, accident prevention and emergency actions, nutritious snacks and basic care of children.

Cost for the seminar is $10.  Pre-registration is required by April 1. On-line registration is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/babysittingregistration or may be taken by phone by calling the hospital at 563-568-3411.

Participants should enter the hospital through the lower level, loading dock entrance near the MRI trailer on the east side of the hospital, along the golf course.

LifeServe Blood Drive

The LifeServe Blood Center blood drive is held on the first Monday of the month. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with their blood and blood products. 

Regular blood donors may donate blood as often as every 56 days. First-time donors will find that donating blood is a safe and easy way to save lives and make a difference in the community. One single blood donation can save the lives of up to three sick or injured hospital patients. 

The donation process is simple:

1. Eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of fluids at least four hours prior to donating.
2. Bring proper identification, such as your donor card or driver’s license.
3. Complete a health history questionnaire and screening interview.
4. Receive a brief health check by trained staff. This includes a check of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and blood iron levels.
5. Sit back while a unit of blood, approximately one pint, is collected. This process takes around 10 minutes.
6. Enjoy refreshments while relaxing for 10-15 minutes before leaving the facility.

The blood that is collected is tested carefully. In fact, all blood that is collected by any blood collection center is all tested the same, according to the federal regulations.

Grandparenting Class

 Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering Grandparenting classes again this spring.  Corinne Cook, RN, Babysitting Class instructor, will teach the next Grandparenting Class on Saturday, April 11 from 9:30 a.m. until Noon. The class will be held in the hospital’s Large Conference Room. 

In these classes, new or soon-to-be grandparents will learn all the new protocols to use when caring for their new grandchild.  Some topics covered will include basic baby care, car seat safety, Tylenol/Ibuprofen dosing charts, home safety, poison control information, infant/child CPR, choking and other emergency medical information as well as tips to support parents such as handling the baby blues and postpartum depression.  Free-will donations will be accepted to cover the costs of the class.

“The rules are always changing when it comes to child care,” states Corinne Cook, RN, class instructor.  “I want to help new grandparents learn the changes that have been made for safety and well-being of infants and children, explaining all the things that have changed since they raised their children.”

Diabetes Support Group

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group holds a monthly meeting on the third Thursday. The meeting will be held in the hospital's Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital.

This diabetes class is open to everyone who has diabetes or has a friend or loved one with diabetes.
